Brian and Cheryl lived in an upscale housing development in the suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky. Brian worked downtown with a financial firm and Cheryl was a veterinarian that worked with horses, in the middle of bluegrass horse country. She was a special equine veterinarian that worked at Churchill Downs, and played a very important part annually in the world famous Kentucky Derby. The family was well known and made good money and therefore were able to easily afford their luxury home in Greenvale Dells, a community situated on a beautiful 18 hole golf course.
Brian and Cheryl had one daughter named Lisa, who was now in high school and preparing for college. She was practically 18 years old, and her parents trusted her with the house because she was going to be living alone at college soon. They had become accustomed to taking weekend trips to their vacation homes and also pleasure trips to other cities around the country. Sometimes Lisa would take advantage of these trips and make her house the party place for her high school friends for the weekend.
The house was beautiful and it was a favorite place for teenagers to come hang out for the parties. It was right on the 17th green of the golf course and they also had a pool in the backyard. Brian was always trying to impress everyone, so he also had a hot tub and sauna in the basement in addition they had an elaborate game room with all the toys. There was a billiards table, a ping pong table, and even a batting cage. The only rules that Lisa had when her friends came over, was that no one destroyed anything. Aside from a few plates, she had never had a problem.
Brian and Cheryl hadn’t installed a home security system because they lived in a gated community and probably one of the most fashionable in Kentucky. They weren’t the only ones on the street who didn’t invest in home security, but with a wall and 24 hour controlled access they felt they had nothing to fear.
One weekend, Brian and Cheryl took a pleasure trip to Chicago just to see the sights and sounds. Friday night Lisa had a decent sized group of friends over for a little bash. They stayed up all night partying Friday and slept most of the day on Saturday. When they had cleaned up everything, they went to their homes and a few of Lisa’s friends stayed with her so she didn’t have to spend the night alone.
As they were in the movie room in the basement, which had a beautiful projection screen with HD projector, they thought they heard a noise upstairs. They convinced themselves that it was just the movie they were watching. When they heard the crashing sound of glass breaking they really panicked. Lisa immediately called the security service from the development, and they in turn called the police. Within a minute the security service was on the scene and saw the burglar fleeing across the gold course. Some pursued, while others waited for police to arrive. When the police arrived they joined in the chase and they two burglars were apprehended on the fairway of the 6th hole.
After that night, Lisa’s parents caught the first flight home. They were disappointed that the situation had occurred and then they decided that they were going to have to add a home security system. They did so and this way they were still able to feel comfortable leaving Lisa home alone. They would feel even better when there would be many weekends where no one would be home.
